Odometer
An odometer is a device used to measure the distance traveled by a vehicle.
It's typically found on the dashboard of cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and other vehicles.
There are two main types:
-
Mechanical Odometer:
- Uses a series of gears and dials to display mileage.
- Common in older vehicles.
-
Digital Odometer:
- Uses electronic sensors and a digital display.
- Common in modern vehicles.
Functions of an Odometer:
- Tracks total distance the vehicle has traveled over its lifetime.
- Helps with maintenance schedules (like oil changes every 5,000 miles/km).
- Used during vehicle resale to estimate wear and value.
- Some vehicles also have a trip odometer, which can be reset to measure shorter distances, like a single journey.
